Greetings to All! It’s a fine, fall day here in the North Carolina mountains. The sun is out, birds are singing and the fall color is in full swing.
Alistair and I are just returning from our Fall Waterfalls Workshop in Brevard and boy was the water falling!… from the falls, from the sky, from inside our tents and everywhere in between.:) The rain, however, didn’t slow us down… our crew was full on and ready to make it happen and so we did. As we ventured out to the first falls, we were greeted with raging waters and very little wind…. a waterfall shooter’s dream! My only regret is that there wasn’t more time… We’re already seeing some nice images being posted from the trip, so I’m sending a shout out to our group, keep up the great work! You can find their tags and shares from the Mountains to Sea Workshops page, so give them a holla and check out their work!
For all the photographers and visitors out there planning a trip this week and next, here’s the latest on the fall color ~
*Areas around Brevard are showing great color mixed with greens. As you climb up Hwy 276 from Brevard to the Parkway, the colors are outstanding. The most vibrant reds and oranges I have ever seen.
*Cashiers, Highlands and Panthertown are looking great. Vibrant colors still mixed with greens. Most of the waterfalls were approaching Peak. The best were Dry Falls and Looking Glass.
*Graveyard Fields is gorgeous, with a few areas just passed peak. Yellowstone(lower) falls is just passed peak.
*The parkway from Asheville to Boone is just gorgeous. Some areas showing more color than others. East facing and higher slopes are showing the most. The valleys are still mostly green.
*Mt. Mitchell and Grandfather Mtn. top colors are beginning to fade, but surrounding color is fantastic!
*The popular areas near Grandfather Mountain, ie. Beacon Heights, Rough Ridge, Boone Fork, The Crag, are all at Peak!
*Price Lake still has some color, but is also showing some bare trees. It’s still very pretty. The rain and winds take their toll here early.
*Bass Lake is gorgeous!
*Hwy 221 is gorgeous!
*Linville Gorge is stunning and the falls are showing good color. There are areas that are still showing some green, but it’s awesome!!
Yes, it’s go time!! Get on out there and enjoy the color this week. By the weekend and into next week the colors will begin to work their way down to lower elevations. If you’re up here next week, don’t worry, there will still be color around and get ready for the colorful sweeping vistas. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous. For the photographer, weather snobs out there(and you know who you are, Haha!), I know it’s calling clear, blue skies. If I were a bettin’ man, I’d say go for it. 🙂 All I’m going to say about it is “New Moon….”
That’s it for now. We hope to see y’all out there!!
